History researchers working with local museum and antiquity groups have documented an inscription at Anandur near Pochampalli in Krishnagiri district that they identify as Tamil Nadu's second known Jewish inscription.
The stone was found near the Thaanthondreeswarar temple after vegetation around the site was cleared. Researchers date the inscription to the 13th century and say it refers to merchant guilds that jointly supported construction at the temple.
Why it is significant
The researchers interpret one of the merchant-group references as evidence of Jewish traders participating in inland commercial networks. Tamil Nadu's earlier known Jewish inscription was reported from the Ramanathapuram region.
