Commission’s position
The Election Commission has informed the Madras High Court that by-elections will not be announced in five Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies until pending election petitions relating to those seats are decided.
The constituencies are Tiruchy East, Perundurai, Viralimalai, Karur and Ambasamudram. The seats became vacant after resignations, while petitions challenging the earlier election outcomes remained before the court.
Interim restraint continues
The High Court had already restrained the notification of by-elections. After the Commission placed its position on record, the interim arrangement was extended and the matter was adjourned.
The timing of any bypolls will therefore depend on the progress and outcome of the pending election litigation.
