Fertiliser becomes a bigger part of the relationship
Russia has offered to increase fertiliser supplies to India, placing agricultural inputs alongside energy as a major component of the bilateral economic relationship.
The offer comes as India continues to rely on overseas supplies for key fertilisers and as trade between the two countries has expanded sharply over the past five years.
Trade has multiplied
India-Russia trade is now close to $60 billion, compared with roughly $13 billion in 2021-22. Fertiliser imports from Russia have also increased, adding another strategic commodity to a relationship already dominated by fuel.
What to watch
The practical impact will depend on volumes, product mix, pricing, payment arrangements and delivery schedules. For India, reliable fertiliser supply is closely linked to farm input costs and food-production stability.
