The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has introduced a dedicated 1601 number series for eligible transactional and service communication. Promotional calls are not permitted through the series.

The intent is to make the caller''s purpose legible before a subscriber answers. A recognisable prefix allows genuine service calls — delivery confirmations, banking alerts, appointment updates — to be distinguished from marketing traffic that subscribers increasingly ignore by default.

The value of such a series depends entirely on enforcement. If promotional traffic leaks into a range reserved for service calls, the signal degrades quickly and subscribers revert to treating every unknown number as spam.
