The Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026 proposes the creation of a five-member National Tribunals Commission to oversee appointments, performance reviews and complaints concerning 16 tribunals and appellate bodies.

The institutions covered by the proposed framework include the Central Administrative Tribunal, National Green Tribunal, Armed Forces Tribunal and National Company Law Appellate Tribunal.

The proposal would create a central supervisory mechanism for institutions that currently operate under different ministries and administrative structures.

The measure is significant because tribunal appointments, vacancies, tenure and institutional independence have repeatedly been subjects of legal and policy debate.

The Bill therefore goes beyond administrative restructuring. Its implementation could affect how specialised adjudicatory institutions are governed and how accountability is balanced with judicial independence.
