Clearance without service
The Porur–Vadapalani section of Chennai Metro Phase II has remained out of passenger service even after receiving safety clearance, according to Dinamani. The report says the regulator had cleared operations earlier in the year, while the completed corridor continues to wait for a start date.
The larger Phase II build
Chennai Metro Phase II spans 118.9 km and is planned with 128 stations. Around 43 km is underground and about 75 km is elevated. The wider Vadapalani–Poonamallee corridor is reported at 14.6 km with 14 stations.
The project authority told the paper that Phase II is 54.62% complete. It also said the Union government has provided ₹14,545 crore since 2024, with a larger set of stations expected to be completed in 2027 and expanded train operations from 2028.
Why commuters care
Porur and the western corridor carry heavy road traffic and serve dense residential, industrial and educational zones. Opening an already-cleared stretch would provide immediate relief while the rest of Phase II remains under construction.
