Forty seats remain vacant

The Supreme Court has asked the Union government to take a decision within one week on whether 40 unfilled super-speciality medical seats should be returned to Tamil Nadu for state-level counselling.

Tamil Nadu had transferred 151 seats and later two additional seats to the all-India pool. The court was told that 113 had been filled, leaving 40 vacant.

Cutoff reduction also sought

The petitioners argued that the qualifying cutoff should be reduced so the remaining seats can be offered through counselling in Tamil Nadu. They also said more than one hundred doctors in the state were waiting for an opportunity to join super-speciality courses.

The court asked the Centre to consider both the return of the vacant seats and the cutoff issue before the matter is taken up again.
