Fatal fall after heavy rain

A 59-year-old woman died after falling into a water-filled roadside depression near Anna Nagar Tower Metro following heavy rain. Passersby attempted a rescue before police and emergency personnel reached the spot.

Cause of death still under examination

Initial concern centred on possible electrical leakage because people near the water reportedly feared a shock. A subsequent power inspection did not find an electrical leak. Police say the exact cause of death will depend on the post-mortem examination.

Who was responsible for the pit?

There are differing accounts about whether the depression was connected to earlier stormwater-drain work or had developed through road wear after the work was completed. Police are examining the circumstances and available CCTV footage.

The incident raises a wider civic question: after rain, an unprotected change in road or pavement level can become a life-threatening hazard even without electrocution.
