Parandur plan ends
Tamil Nadu has formally dropped the proposal to build Chennai’s second airport at Parandur after prolonged opposition from affected villages. The government says alternative locations have been shortlisted where the impact on homes and agricultural land would be lower.
The next site will be chosen after technical feasibility studies. The announcement changes the location, not the stated need for a second airport serving the Chennai region.
Meenambakkam becomes the bridge
The existing Chennai airport currently handles about 30 million passengers a year. Ongoing terminal work is expected to lift capacity to about 35 million, while a proposed fifth terminal with capacity for another 20 million passengers could take the combined figure to roughly 55 million passengers annually.
The fifth-terminal concept is still at an early stage and will require detailed traffic, access and engineering studies.
Questions now shift to linked infrastructure
The Parandur plan had become an anchor for a wider network of road, metro, logistics and industrial-connectivity proposals. The state must now decide which remain independently useful, which should be redesigned, and how land already acquired for the airport will be handled.
The immediate policy test is speed: Chennai needs both an interim capacity plan at the existing airport and a credible, time-bound path to a new greenfield airport.
